You stepped into your car. I never knew you'd go so far. The longest drive of your life and I went home. I know what you're thinking. I know how you're feeling always.
All I want to know, did you think of me as you let go. You were so alone and I went home.
Did you give a clue, I swear I never knew. We talked of our tomorrow but you never came. I knew what you're thinking. I knew how you're feeling I'm so sure.
All I want to know, did it cross your mind what you'd leave behind. You were so alone and I went home. And do you know, the thing that just won't lie. You never said goodbye.

I just can't get enough of this song! It makes me cry every time! I love the irony that he says, "I know what you're thinking. I know what you're feeling always," and then wants to know what she was thinking... He really only knows what he wants her to think and feel... So heart-breaking!

I have to agree, it is a heart-breaking song.
For me, that's the beauty of music, and in particular of John's music - the writer/singer asks the questions and we as the listeners try to find the answers based on our own life experience and the way we relate to the words.

He really only knows what he wants her to think and feel... So heart-breaking! Guess I am reading the lyrics differently... To me it sounds like he is aware of her feelings, but wonders if she ever took into consideration his feelings....

I agree, I always thought the same thing that Loraline when I read: "...All I want to know, did you think of me..." or "...All I want to know, did it cross your mind what you'd leave behind...".
What makes me being out of breath is the feeling of guilt along the entire song and the broken hopes of a future that will never be, it's the sadnest part of the song.

Yes, Lucy, I agree that "Did it cross your mind what you'd leave behind," means that he wants to know if she thinks at all about the possibility of what could have been... For me, when he says, "I know what you're thinking. I know what you're feeling always," I get the feeling he's being ironic. I think, if he did know how she was feeling, he wouldn't have "Questions." I could be wrong though, Loraline... I have been told that I read too much into things before... LOL!
The saddest line for me is the last one, "And do you know the the thing that just won't lie. You never said goodbye." Great use of personification... Things can't lie...

that is just the thing, Missalabama.. you are not wrong, nor am I.. It is what music and lyrics is all about too, that we can read our thoughts in it, our own feelings:) That is what makes the music and lyrics great, that we can all read something different in it..... And there is no right or wrong in that, only a difference Which is good for if we would all constantly read, hear and/or see the same thing, the world would soon be a boring place to live in....
