Nothing beats the energy and emotional intensity of a song performed live. Nothing beats the songcraft and sonic sensations of a skillfully shaped studio version. IMO that's totally different things.
Really stuck on the album track at the moment, I love the overall feel of the song, the vocals, the sound of the guitars, the sweeping sound elements that appear on the left or on the right or whatever dimension , the strings that seem to spin around my head - it's just an amazing song and a real mixing masterpiece. GREAT!

In my "I Leave on Friday" video John is continually traveling but he can never get to his final destination and he has really bad travel scenarios... He's always packing and unpacking at new hotels, going through security lines, having to take his shoes off, his belt buckle makes the metal detector go off, he gets sniffed by security dogs and frisked by really fat old men, his shampoo bottle is too big for the carry on size, he hits his head on the overhead bin, he can't fit his luggage in the overhead bin, he has to sit by annoying Miami guys and old women who hit on him, his luggage gets lost and his guitar case gets busted, he accidentally leaves his passport at the hotel, and he argues with taxi drivers... Meanwhile there's a beautiful girl who's trying to reach him. She's racing in her car to the airport and running down the sidewalk to the hotel and through the airport lobby but she keeps missing him. Last scene... He's looking out the airplane window and she's sitting in her car watching the plane take off. How does your "I leave on Friday" video go, Jadie? Thanks Missy for posting and for your great description of the scenario. I can't believe, it's kind of weird cause that's pretty much like my video does go as well. Starts in a hotel-room, John sitting at the foot of the bed packing his things, you can see the back of a blonde girl sleeping on the other side of the bed. Then he's leaving (it's Friday, by the way), guitar case in hand and gets on an elevator - one of those called Paternoster (we've got such a thing in one of the buildings I'm working in *hint hint*, it's quite old but still in service - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx3MHm9WjBE&feature=related ). Elevator goes downwards, John is shredding slips of paper (photographs, bills etc), the little pieces are fluttering around and out the elevator. Then he gets on a Cab to heavy traffic, eventually arrives at an airport and is boarding a plane (Considering my recent airport disaster, I've decided to spare him the security bit, I'm nice like that ). In between the scenes a big clock appears with its hands moving around incredibly fast. Now some parts of the film go backwards, means elevator goes upwards, all the shredded slips of paper/pics become whole again, hands of the clock move counterclockwise, though this time 'painfully' slow. Last scene: John is crossing an airfield in slow-motion, guitar case still with him, then climbing the stairs of a gangway, camera zooms out and and you see that there's NO plane there. Video ends with him standing at the top of the stairs that lead nowhere... so, kind of open ending. Okay, don't know if this makes sense, maybe I should submit it in German rather, would defo be much less embarrassing. Oh, and sorry Jenny, I know you've heard it all before when we were on the plane to London in December. I would like to see this video in your head, Jadey! I vote you as director! ;D Actually, I have always have a video in my head for this one too! I wonder if ours are both different than what John has in mind though? I wonder the same thing... we'll never know I'm afraid...

Hey Jadie, Funny that our videos are very similar. I love your video too, especially elevator/clock idea. It sounds cool and very German! I get the feeling that it's kind of dark, abstract and perhaps influenced by old German expressionist movies? I like that idea! I LOVE that elevator in that link by the way. It reminds me a little of an old one I saw in Paris in an old Art Deco apartment building... It had a folding wooden door with a window and you had to close it yourself. I had seen the ones with the metal screens that you have to close before but that was the first one I saw with a wooden door. I'm not sure why but for some reason, my "I leave on Friday" girl has long, very dark, brunette hair... Although my "So Close" girl is blonde. My "I Leave on Friday" video never shows them togther like in your opening scene but my final scene of my "So Close" video has a scene of a girl alone in bed and John leaving. I wonder if ours are both different than what John has in mind though? I wonder the same thing... we'll never know I'm afraid... I hope not! I would love to see videos for all of the lovely Garribabies! Hey John, if you need any people to help making videos, I will work cheaply! While you are a frustrated actor, John, I am a frustrated artist/photographer/director/writer/musician and will do in my next life... Meantime I'm a pro boardie!

I hate being lost here for a long time and missing this GREAT chat! These last weeks I've been thinking about Departures videoclips as well LOL!!! It's funny to find that there's a suitcase in every video we thought, mine too, but there's no John, just a almost-blonde girl, and there's a train station instead of airport... And all starts with a shot from inside a suitcase that she closes. Then she wears a coat, and leaves an empty bedroom, with her heels covering a long corridor and arriving to the street.
Then she takes a black cab in an unknown suburb of London, and there's a lot of shots in movement through the window, like the spectator were inside the taxi. Then a hand with a white glove gives some pounds to the taxi driver, and the girl's heels again walk to the train station, a very old one, brown and grey.
Inside the station there's a lot of people, going and coming, posh worried executives watching their watches and checking the arrivals/departures board, couples that meet with romantic kisses, lost backpackers asking old people where to go, and people crying saying goodbye. The girl's eyes look around and check the hour, and then the camera zoom in the departures board, there's a train that is due to leave in 45 minutes to Glasgow. While she waits sitting in a dark wood bench and taking off her gloves, she starts to remember an argue with a boy, as a flashback, but spectators can only see from the mouth to the feet, arms gesticulating, lips shouting, and boy's mouth saying "it's over" and leaving her alone with her tears.
Back to the train station, she crosses the checkpoint, goes up the train, places her suitcase, and checks her ticket to sit in a dark red seat beside the window, which she blocks up with a courtain. From the train station we can see the train leaving, and then the camera goes down to the wooden bench, where there's a pair of white gloves, that a man hand takes. The camera zooms out and it's the boy of the argue. And the image fades in black.
It's long to explain but short to see, sorry!

Hey Lucy and Missy... I really loved to read your ideas and thoughts, nice descriptions all around. I just listened to the song again trying to picture your different video versions. Isn't it just great that we all are so inspired by this tune! I hope not! I would love to see videos for all of the lovely Garribabies! Hey John, if you need any people to help making videos, I will work cheaply! Isn't it just great that we all are so inspired by this tune! ;D ;D @ Lucita and Jadey, I loved reading both of yours too!!!!! They are all beautiful and it is so great that his work inspired so much creativity. I think we should make all three of them individually, on low budget and then get together to splice them together into one video. Instead of "4 Rooms" the Tarantino movie with 4 directors, it will be a video with 3 directors. ;D ;D ;D
