Sooo Sorry for making y'all wait on my review and movies, Girlies! Long travels home and Computer issues! Hey Flakie, good to see you back. Been missin' ya! Guess What, Girlies.... I think Kitine sent me a wee, tiny bit of her bravery. Well, either that or I had enough Gin in me to ask for a pic and I spoke with him... And Pernille too. They were both so nice. It was great to meet them. i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt342/BamaGal1974_photos/IMG_1209.jpgMeeting John Garrison... Accidentally on video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7OAU7AuPT4AHHHHH! I'm still on my Garrison High! It was absolutely beautiful! And funny too. When my taxi pulled up to the bar, the taxi driver yelled at me because he had failed to tell me that his card machine was down when I got in and I ended up being $5 short on cash. I had to walk a block down the street to an ATM at a gas station with scary, sketcho men glaring at me and whooping... I wondered if this approach has ever worked on a woman in the history of mankind... And I began to regret the over-the-knee-boot decision. After all that, Mr. Taxi Man was nowhere in sight when I got back. Oopsie! Sorry! At the door, the door guy, a boy half my age, actually carded me! So I now love him! He asked me what band I was there to see and I said, "John Garrison, of course!" with a big, silly grin on my face and he said, "Cool, Man!" The first person I saw when I walked in was Pernille with a great, sweet smile for me as if to say, "It's ok to talk to him, you don't have to be nervous." Of course I was though (I always feel weird approaching people I don't know, particularly musicians, because I just don't want to bother them). John was setting things up on stage... Where is Mike the sound guy when you need him? I sat at the bar and again tried to be cool but was just so excited about a second Garrison gig! The girl across from me at the bar had been to Rockwood so we chatted a little about the gig. John finished setting up and then he walked over to the bar and talked with her. He smiled and waved at me and said Hello. AW! Sweet! So now on with the actual gig, what can I say but that it was the time of my life! Just lovely! His voice was just gorgeous and the music so gentle and subtle. It was a very powerful and emotional set. My personal favorites of the night were “Bugs to the Light,” “So Close,” and a surprise Frankie Goes to Hollywood cover. Set list: 1) Rendezvous 2) Cold Coffee 3) Let's Run 4) So Close 5) Bugs to the Light 6) Surprise Cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's The Power of Love 7) I Leave on Friday 8) "Cheesy Cover Finale"... Born to Run, Springsteen Afterward, I was waiting on my tab and John and Pernille said thanks for coming as they were walking out. I said it was beautiful and had a bit of an awkward handshake with John but didn't ask for a pic. I was waiting on my tab and just felt awkward to ask. A few minutes later, I noticed that Rockwood girl and her boyfriend were getting pictures outside, so I thought to h*** with it and went outside and asked. Since he is the nice English guy, he said, "Of course." Rockwood girl's boyfriend offered to take the pic and then I rummaged through my giant purse for my huge camera and the battery was dead of course. Luckily, I have a second little digital camera. So finally we start to take the picture and it is on video instead of photo, LOL! Then of course my brain isn't functioning properly and I can't remember how to work a camera I've owned for 3 years... Poor John had to tell the guy where the button was! Got the pic on the second take. John was so nice, he even offered to take a third if my eyes were closed. He teased me about walking down the block with my gin and tonic still in my hand after the Rockwood gig and I had to laugh! We chatted for a few minutes. I asked about "Ongoing." He said he hasn't worked on it lately. I spoke with Pernille too. She was very sweet and has a very sweet voice. She asked where I was from and I explained that I grew up in Alabama but now live in Florida. He thanked me for coming again. I thought that was so nice. I should be the one thanking him for his music and for humoring fans such as myself. There were so many things that I wanted to say but forgot. I forgot to ask John to sign my Blunty ticket or any of my CDs. I also still have my iPhone bill that he could sign... Hahah! I was sad that there was no Afroshane. I wanted to ask him about Flight of the Conchords and other things he is working on now, and tell him how much I love “Business Time” because it just makes me laugh every time… Plus, he is just way too cute! I forgot to tell Pernille that I have been looking for a little pink dress like hers in the Departures video but with no luck. Most of all I would have told John that his music has touched me in a very special way. Will post my videos ASAP. They take ages to download and my computer keeps crashing.

Thank you, Missy, ever so much for your great review and for uploading all your videos. Couldn't watch them yet (bad connection, too slow to make them move ) - but will watch it all once I'm back home. So happy that you got to talk to John an had this lovely picture taken. And what a treat that you got to hear "Bugs To the Light" and "The Power of Love" - Looking at the set list, now I wish all the more I could have been there! LOL @ the 'over-the-knee-boots'-bit.... I bet these guys would be scared to death if this approach actually worked on a woman for the first time in the history of mankind... ;D Thanks again, you're a star!!!

Glad I could make you laugh with the boots bit! I haven't been brave enough to wear them again yet... Wondering if they're a bit too much! Hahah! Wish you had been there too! There are no words to describe how absolutely beuatiful it was! The music was soft, sad, sexy, sweet, and emotional all at the same time. The best thing about his music is that in a world of mediocre, corporate, packaged music, his is just so true, honest and heartfelt and he seems more like a normal guy than a rocker... Well, of course, I don't know him and he could be a typical Rock Star who is full of **** but I don't think so! He seems too nice for that! His lyrics are just too heartbreaking and his music just too lovely! ;D Thanks for the sweet Star comment... You are too!

Thank you, Missy, so much for the videos. Today I took the time to actually watch them (felt a little bit like I was there).
Loved especially "Bugs To The Light" and "Cold Coffee", but they're all great, as you can always tell that he means what he is singing about - it's personal, it's real, it's emotional - just a beautiful performance.
Hurts me as much as it annoys me to see (and hear) that folks keep talking during the songs. How rude is that?? I just don't get how people can behave so discourteously. Made me think of the first time I saw James Blunt at a rather intimate venue back in 2006. Before playing "Goodbye My Lover" he said something like "Do me a favour, please could you ask that person talking beside you during the song to keep it down? - I'm trying to make some girl in the front row cry". Admittedly, in the case of Mr Garrison the "making some girl cry"- bit works despite all the talking. His acoustic sets seem to be even more emotional than those with a band - I'm yet to experience one myself.

That's why I took videos rather than pics... I have loved seeing all of the videos that you girls have taken at John's gigs and so I wanted you gals to get to experience it too, since y'all couldn't be there with me. For me, the All Asia gig was even more emotional than the Rockwood gig. I seriously thought I was going to cry during "So Close" and "The Power of Love." I also felt like John might cry particularly during "the Power of Love" but also on "So Close," which made me feel even more like I was going to cry. I think the only reason I didn't was that I was trying to concentrate on doing good videoing. Yes, I agree, Jade, it is real, personal and emotional... That's why we LOVE him, right? I LOVE your Blunty gig story, Jade. It is both very sad and a little cute at the same time. I love that he turned a negative into something funny! Go, Blunty! He's pretty witty! You're lucky to have seen him in a small venue before he became a HUGE phenom. I'm a bit jealous! Sidebar: I love your wide range in music taste... Anyone who likes Nirvana, Muse and also Blunty is cool in my opinion... You're not a music snob. You like what you like. It doesn't matter what the critics or what other people say about it. That's one of the reasons I feel like you are a kindred spirit even though I have never met you. Speaking of artists calling out people in the audience, have y'all seen Eric Hutchinson's "Up Front Girls" video? Funny! www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIZzKzDzogMRegarding the talkers, yes it was sad particularly because it was such a heartfelt performance... I think they were oblivious. Yes, I know I can't throw stones at anyone since I AM the "No-Talent, Ass-Clown" (Ofice Space movie reference for anyone who hasn't seen it) who forgets to turn her cell phone off at Rockwood but at least I know that I was wrong though, at least I wasn't purposely being rude and at least I wasn't one of the ones talking while someone was performing. Even though I apologized on-line, I regret that I forgot to do it in person. It will definitely never happen again and I still feel like an ARSE. I think that the kids who were talking at All Asia didn't even realize that they were being loud and rude because they were hanging out in the back rather than hanging around the stage listening to the music and I think I remember that there might have been some guys playing pool too... There was rather a lot going on... All Asia is a bigger place than Rockwood and it has a side area for pool... I say "kids" because I felt like it was in a college bar... I think the audience consisted more of locals and the college crowd there to hang with friends rather than music junkies there to hear their bands... It was definitely not the same type crowd as at Rockwood. Rockwood felt more like a music crowd. Probably why John likes it so much. It is a nice, intimate little space.

You're lucky to have seen him in a small venue before he became a HUGE phenom. I'm a bit jealous! Ah yes, I would not have missed the experience of seeing Blunty before he made it really BIG as there was definitely a different feel to his performance (not saying it was better, just different). And he used to make a lot of witty comments in between his songs. Fortunately, the statement mentioned above was not addressed at me personally! I love your wide range in music taste... Anyone who likes Nirvana, Muse and also Blunty is cool in my opinion... You're not a music snob. You like what you like. It doesn't matter what the critics or what other people say about it. That's one of the reasons I feel like you are a kindred spirit even though I have never met you. Thanks for the kind words, Missy. I feel the same. And it's true, for me as a listener, the only thing that matters is whether or not I like what I hear, regardless of genre, artist or whatever. I couldn't care less what others consider cool or uncool, worth listening to or sh!t. I love Puccini as much as Portishead and Rachmaninov as much as Rage Against The Machine. As long as a song or a piece of music moves me (not necessarily in a sentimental way), as long as it resonates with me in one way or another and it's skillfully done (not necessarily in terms of technical perfection) I put it on my love-list and am thankful that there are people out there capable of saying things in music and lyrics in a way I wish I could do myself. (Hmm, does this make sense? I hope). Though I have to admit every time I'd go to a record store (at least twice a week), most of the music I'm looking for is featured in the Alternative section, even if I would probably have put it to Pop or Rock. Even the Kings Of Leon are listed as Alternative here, hmm. But at the end of the day it's not important what the music is labelled as long as it is good. Aww, sooo funny and sooo cute! Never heard of Eric Hutchinson before, he's a major talent I think and his smile is really contagious. Thanks for posting the link, Missy! One of the comments below the video made me think, as there's definitely some truth in this: Regarding the talkers, yes it was sad particularly because it was such a heartfelt performance... Thanks for clearing things up regarding All Asia Bar, Missy, that's one of the benefits of having been there that you got to see the 'bigger picture'. I'm feeling much better now! Oh, and you don't feel bad about the phone thing - You did say sorry after all. I suggest doing what I did: Have it signed by Mister Garrison. Once you've got that lovely "Johnny" signature on your phone, you'll never put it away, hence you'll never forget to switch it off. PS: I wonder if there'll be a Twitter-like 140 characters restriction on this board anytime soon... It's needed, I'm afraid... ;D

Woo! Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this one, JayDee... Had to have time to write a proper response. Oh, yes, I loved seeing Blunty last year. I just also would have loved to have seen him before he made it BIG too. Of course there are lots of bands on that list for me too. U2, Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, etc., etc. I will admit that Dave Matthews Band in a 60,000 capacity stadium now looses so much in translation from a tiny bar in 1994 with only about 50 people! It’s not that it’s bad, it’s jut that their music is rather delicate and better appreciated in a smaller, more intimate setting, I think. I still LOVE them though. But at the end of the day it's not important what the music is labelled as long as it is good. ;D ;D ;D You're welcome! Thanks for always making me smile and laugh, JayDee! ;D This makes perfect sense, Jade. I too am glad that there are others who can say what I can’t say myself. I took poetry writing in college. Man, I was awful… So overly romantic and melancholy. Of course, at 20, I had no life experiences to write of, as I was such a sheltered, naïve and innocent little girl. Hahhaha! Everything I wrote was a mediocre imitation of what another person already said. I’m always amazed at brilliant poetry and lyrics such as John’s! I agree with you on some of the artists music stores put in the Alternative category and I often think that the whole category is a sort of load of Marketing BS by the industry anyway. The category has really lost its original cache. It seems like now every new band is alternative, so alternative has become mainstream. I don’t know if this makes sense, but what I think I am trying to say is that the original idea of using the term “Alternative” to distinguish bands like Nirvana and Rage against the Machine from ones like Dave Matthews Band and Widespread Panic is sort of gone. They’re all “Alternative” now… Whatever “Alternative” really means… I’m still not quite sure after all these years. LOL! Though most of what I bought in the 90s and still today is categorized as alternative, I have to admit that I’ve never really been exactly sure of term. It makes me feel like the industry is trying to trick me into thinking a band is different or cool so that I will buy what they want me to buy. I mean it’s not really a very descriptive term or genre like Jazz, Country, Bluegrass, or Classical. It’s sort of like when you are feeding an infant babyfood and you put the peas on first and then the applesauce on top to make it think that it’s eating apple sauce and not peas. I feel like it’s the industry’s little inside joke on the consumer, like they have to tell the kids that Landon Pigg is alternative when he’s really a singer-songwriter. I have no idea if I am just rambling or making any sense but anyway, I agree with you, Jade. I like the music that I like no matter the category or whether the artist is considered cool. Hence my LOVE of The Beach Boys! “And she’ll have fun, fun, fun ‘til her daddy takes the T-Bird away!” LAALALA! By the way, the strangest category in my opinion is “Alternative Country.” What is that? I have no idea what that even means but all I can think of is Billy Ray Cyrus covering “1979” or something. ROFL! P.S. I LOVE Rachmaninoff too and I love the Rachmaninoff scene in the Marilyn Monroe movie, “The Seven Year Itch!” One of my favorite movies! A classic and Marilyn’s best, I think! It is hilarious! That’s actually where I first heard of Rachmaninoff. Speaking of Marilyn, I’ve always thought that the greatest irony of Marilyn Monroe’s life was that every woman in the world wanted to be that beautiful but her whole life was a struggle to prove that she had a mind too. I mean she was the poster girl for being typecast in the bimbo role. Also, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have a chest that big… ROFL! www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7CnSPMPt68I have to admit that I know only a little of Puccini. Unfortunately, I know more of ballet composers than opera. That is something I have always regretted. My favorites of classical music are Tchaikovsky, Constant Lambert, Samuel Barber and Albioni. Aww, sooo funny and sooo cute! Never heard of Eric Hutchinson before, he's a major talent I think and his smile is really contagious. Thanks for posting the link, Missy! You’re welcome. Glad you like. He’s one of my newest FAVES! He is very talented, isn’t he? He made a break through this past year because the MTV VJ ,Perez Hilton, likes him and talked about him in his blog. Perez is actually in one of his videos. I LOVE his voice and he does have an infectious smile! He’s very upbeat and he does a lot of funny covers. My favorite is his Justin Timberlake spoof. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJIW6ZzP7Wk One of the comments below the video made me think, as there's definitely some truth in this: WOW! True! I can only imagine! I am TERRIFIED of Public Speaking and used to get stage fright when had to make speeches and presentations for school! It was the all eyes on me thing that SCARED me! I didn’t want the attention of people listening to me and probably would be relieved at the thought that no one was listening to me make an idiot of myself but still I think I know what that person meant by that comment! The feeling that people are not interested in what you are trying to say or do could be devastating if you are really performing your heart out! When an audience is talking, one could easily get the feeling that the audience is bored by you or thinks you are bad even if you are not. Show biz is tough… Thanks for clearing things up regarding All Asia Bar, Missy, that's one of the benefits of having been there that you got to see the 'bigger picture'. Just want to say, I’m not defending the talkers, I wasn’t the one performing on stage, so I don’t know how it felt to John, but I’m only saying that I actually didn’t notice the folks talking until I saw the video… I wasn’t really paying much attention to anything but the stage though... ;D It's kind of like when my Dad is watching golf on TV, my Mom can have a whole conversation with him and he won’t remember any of it. “Selective hearing” is what my Mom calls it! Good idea, JayDee, in having the old iPhone signed by Johnny G. That’s exactly what I need signed by him. Very apropos! PS: I wonder if there'll be a Twitter-like 140 characters restriction on this board anytime soon... It's needed, I'm afraid... ;D The 140-Character Twitter limit is definitely hard for me… ROFL!!!! Let’s hope John doesn’t start that rule here. We’d have to start coming up with our own anagrams! Hahaaha! I wonder how many characters this post is! SORRY for divergence from All Asia topic… Par for the course for Missy, what else is new, right?
