Hello John, are you going to come to Europe for a solo gig at some point? I'd absolutely love to attend I can't get your songs out of my head (and I don't want to either)... Where do you get the inspiration for them? They are all genious and very moving When is your birthday? That's not entirely professional, I know... but in case someone of us somehow sees you on that day and doesnt know it's your birthday... x Thank You Hopefully one day I'll play in Europe again. I'm very busy with James for the rest of the year but, yes, I think I will play in Europe at some point. The inspiration comes from anything and everything. Impossible to narrow that one down I'm afraid. Whatever moves me I will write about. Birthday is 7th January

where does your inspiration come from, how do you pick the red lines in your music? how do you start creating your songs? is it music first, lyrics later or the other way around? when you write lyrics, what comes first? do you write straight from the heart, but adjust later? do you adjust at all? does your mind travel or wander off while writing music/lyrics? uhm.. yeah... totally different question... how did you ever get to play bass for Rammstein??? not like I don't have any other questions, but will first see if you read/answer these at all... *blush* As i said before, I get inspiration from everything and anything. Whatever moves me to want to write about it. I don't know what you mean by red lines. sorry. Sometimes I get a melody and chord structure in my head. Sometimes I get a lyric idea. With the lyrics I write down whatever the situation is about in "normal" speak, then I chop and adjust to fit the rhythm and rhyme of the music later. I usually have 2 separate areas. I have several lyric books that just have words only in them. then I have a computer with musical ideas only on it, or just an idea stuck in my head (they are the most annoying as they wake me up). Then, every few months or so, I will sit down with both and put the ideas together. Occasioanally the music and the lyrics come at the same time. These are usually the best songs ("Is this The Best It Gets", "Convincing Myself" were finished within 10 minutes of getting the idea) Yes my mind does wander. Sometimes an idea will spark off a different idea that I will end up going along with. That happens a lot.

loraline, great questions, that's exactly what I would like to know as well!!! Songwriting process, inspiration and the oh so interesting Rammstein thing (btw, the voice of the singer, Till Lindemann, scares me somehow, not quite so soothing)... I played bass and guitar on a remix of Rossenrot that ended up as the b-side of the single of the same name

Thanks for the answers John!
Being such a great artist, how do you stay so grounded and level headed?

awww bless you!! my question is are you gonna come and have a drink with us in the mud at Glastonbury? oh and are you any good at pitching tents (cos we'll be rubbish!)....ahem if you'll excuse what that could also sound like..... I'm going to be having many drinks that day I can't/don't do tents. I went to festivals in my old 1972 VW campervan when I used to go to those things. Now I am older, I will only go if I am playing or I have somewhere reasonable to sleep. My (many) festival days of sleeping in tents or on benches (V99) are long gone I'm afraid.

My question is : What is your favorite part of touring the world? &Do you prefer to tour as a solo artist or with a band? thanks take care hugs! Colleen x I love seeing the world while still making music. It's all I ever wanted to do. Touring with James is fantastic as he and the rest of the guys are really great guys and now good friends. My Budapest days were great too but there is a lot of pressure as the front man. I am very much enjoying being at the back for once. I love playing my little intimate solo shows too as I get a chance to connect with a handful of people which I think suits my songs. Being able to play music live at all is a fantastic feeling whatever and how ever it may be.
