I've noticed as I'm sure all of you have... John's first two solo albums contain a couple old demos reworked such as Abdicate, and So Close. It got me thinking... John has a lot of unreleased demos. Which ones do you like most that shouldn't be left behind?
"High on Getting By" had a good structure, meaningful lyrics, and has a nice 'groove' to it, for a lack of a better word.
"Before I Fall Apart" ... wow. I still can't believe this one hasn't seen the light of day, though I can understand that this song wouldn't have fit the mood or feeling of either Cosmos or Departures.
And that "Ongoing" instrumental is NICE. Calm and soothing. I could totally see the above mentioned songs and the new "After You Left" paired together on a new album. ;D
What do you all think?

I agree, High on Getting By and Before I Fall Apart are beautiful. So are: Goodbye, I Hope, Floating Past The Rooftops, Silver Moon and Deep Disguise. And Love Come Undone, You And I, Atomic Energy, Changing Pictures, Dark Cloud. I really wish everyone knew these songs...

Nothing Comes Close? Is that a new one I don't know? I've got a lot of the old stuff... I never got my hands on Ordinary People, or the old Red Fridge disc. There really isn't a bad song of John's.

I think I've got almost everything, so if anyone wants a song, I can upload it to rapidshare as I did with a Budapest demo for Jade

Nice thread, thanks for starting it, Nate. NEW ALBUM (or EP or whatever) sounds GOOD to me!!!! From John's blog, Oct 19th, 2010This statement really made my day and it's stuck in my head ever since I read it a couple of days ago. Just so you know, Mister Garrison, I can't wait, either!!!! ;DI've noticed as I'm sure all of you have... What do you all think? Ah yes, I too would love to see these 3 songs recorded for John's next album/musical project, 'Ongoing' in particular. Along with the new ones we've already had the chance to listen to, this would be brilliant. "Cornerstone" is another unreleased demo I'd love if it was on the upcoming record, it's one of my favs and I think it would fit the mood/ overall theme that I imagine comes with "Choirs, Strings, Churches and old synths" quite well. "Goodbye" and "The Sooner I Wake" would also be an option IMO, other favs of mine, such as the 'naughtier' "Wall" or "Deaf Eyes", maybe not so much - which is a pitty actually as they never fail to make my indie-heart beat twice as fast . Let's save them for his 4th solo record then. Sadly, the new song, premiered at the Esquires in Coventry, still didn't pop up anywhere on the net. I'm dying to hear it, even if it was only a snippet. HELP, anyone?!?! Speaking of unreleased demos, I'm not sure anymore whether it's okay with John that we are listening to them and discussing the songs here. Many of the demos in question are no longer available for 'public consumption' on Lewis's Budapest-page and I would assume this is not for no reason. Of course, we were given John's permission once, but this was more than 2 years ago and his view on the whole thing might have changed by now?! I can only hope John will let us know and won't hesitate to chime in here if he wants us to stop talking about his demos. ;D I don't mind one little bit. They are all my babies and I will always love them. Some may be prettier than others and some may be naughtier, but they are all loved.
Thank you to everyone who has brought my rather sorry forum to life. It really means a lot to me that you all are talking about my songs so favorably. It am really touched by it all I promise.
Thanks again and please keep coming back
Love John ;D ;D ;D

Totally forgot about Cornerstone! I agree, it would probably fit in perfectly.

I can't speak for John obviously, but I'd be surprised if he, for some reason, didn't want us to talk about his old demos! They're all great... full of emotion and raw talent. In my opinion, all of his unreleased demos are far better than just about everything on the radio these days ;D

In my opinion, all of his unreleased demos are far better than just about everything on the radio these days ;D Absolutely!!! They ARE all great, just too good for easy cheesy radio. Even after 3 years of listening to his album songs/demos on a daily basis, many times I'm still like 'Whoa - Can't believe there's someone out there capable of writing such amazing and truly moving music and lyrics', all so different but each and every song of an extremely high standard. And that's why it distresses me a lot to see all these fakes and forgeries nowadays that claim to make music and get massive airplay. Rant over.As for the unreleased demos, I too hope it's okay that we listen to and are talking about them here. It's just, at times, I'm feeling a bit guilty that I have all these songs because, to me, the amount of 'give' and 'take' seems way out of balance (if you know what I mean). Plus, after all, the demos are his intellectual property (term?), which I thought should be taken into consideration before we share, discuss or whatever. Up to now, John didn't step in on the subject, did he? So, it's all good me thinks!! ;D ;D

I hear ya with the "give & take" thought process. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours John has put all of his effort and talent into creating his works. The role that we play, the listeners, is far easier to do ;D Now, there really isn't anything we can do to even the "give & take" imbalance. So... I do everything I can, as I'm sure a lot of you do as well. I found the Budapest album "Too Blind to Hear" back in 2004 on accident. However, it is no accident that I share John's music to MANY people over the years, and almost all of them are still listening. My brother, for example, is a huge "metal-head." He's all into the screaming death metal that quite frankly, I find to be quite talent-less. But every time "Something Somewhere" plays in my car stereo, you can bet your bottom dollar both of us are singing along word for word ;D Seeing John in Chicago was one of the most enjoyable days of my life. "Save the Day"? Wow.. what a thriller. He's trying to promote his "Departures" album, yet he recognizes that there are people that love his past songs as well, and he was willing to revisit his past then. What I like most about John is his heart; How selfless he has been over the years. So I think that if we keep listening, keep spreading the word, and show up to his gigs and support him... I think that's the closest we all can get to even the imbalance

When I got the demos from Steve a few years ago I asked John before I shared and his response was as follows...
"Feel free to do with as you wish (except profit from them obviously)"
So, that is the word from the man himself! If anyone needs a demo I am more than willing to email them to you...like I did in the past.
Just let me know! ;D

And the bit about you and your 'metal head' brother singing 'Something, Somewhere' in the car is really sweet. Thanks for sharing.
