2:30am NYC time... Let's Run... like a shot of adrenaline! Who can sleep after a track like that! ... Who can sleep after a statement like that!!! ;D ;D Is there usually a lot of discussion involved with the artist on how to make a track sound like or does everything kind of fall into place if artist and mixer/producer are basically on the same wavelength? Is it a good thing to have the artist around or does it make things more complicated? So, after reading your latest entries, I'm assuing it IS a good thing to have the artist around, if nothing else than for making it through the sleepless nights... . But seriously, I guess two 'creative minds' getting together and a constant and direct exchange of thoughts and ideas can only be a good thing, and despite all the hard work and all the concentration that is required to make the tracks sound perfect, the two of you - and probably everyone else involved - seem to have a lot of fun!! ;D ;D... (oops, that's a bit of a run-on sentence, I know, but your excitement and enthusiasm is really contagious, so you must forgive me...) Loving your up-dates on the process, theafroshane, feels almost like being part of it, keep it coming, pleeeaaase!! As a producer, one's job is to achieve the artist's vision. In the end it's their record and i just have to use all my abilities to make it as good as possible. So there is constant discussion of sounds, approaches, parts, methods, ideas etc. From before even our first sessions for the new album back in September we were in constant contact with ideas and listening to old demos and new demos and no demos of songs we both considered contenders for his 2nd solo effort. For this record we made a very conscious effort to record the sounds exactly as we wanted to hear them as opposed to having everything pretty dry and normal and doing all the effecting in the mix process. This makes it better to keep the tracks progressing because we were hearing them nearer and nearer to completion while working separately in the gaps when John was on tour. To your 2nd question, it's good to have an artist around sometimes. It's not good to have them hovering over you while you are tweaking little things here and there but you need their reaction and if they are talented as John it's a blessing because when it's right, they know it is and say so and don't waffle. I need the artist to have a fresh perpective, so if they sit there while i fiddle with drum sounds for an hour they aren't going to be able to just listen to the mix. They'll be worried about stuff while I am just messing with stuff and balancing everything. Basically the artist has to trust the producer, so I sit with the track for a couple hours and do my thing and then when I've got it close to what I consider "done" the artist comes in and listens and reacts and usually we just are making subtle adjustments according to taste. It's at this point we try some silly stuff like crazy effects or delays or maybe we take out a verse because it was too long etc. Then we record a mix and take it home for overnight listening. We make notes and 99% of the time John and my notes are the same (that's where a connection to the artist helps!) and we adjust and print the final mixes for mastering and then move onto the next tune... This whole process is a tremendous amount of fun. I consider myself lucky to be able to shape these tracks and working with John is incredibly gratifying and fulfilling. Sorry if I'm running on, I'm writing this while making notes on last night's mix of "Rendezvous"... get your dancin shoes on! ok - off to the studio!!
