Alexander & Annabel
Sirens ring out across the New York City night Lights blaze up and light up the city sky bright And there’s people screaming out “we’re all going to die”, “we’re all going to hell”
Bridge leans out across water no-one can swim in Man cries out “there’s nothing in this world for him” Well the river welcomes all around here, around here
Alexander & Annabel, all around them little hearts Never breaking away, maybe fading slowly, but never far apart Alexander loves Annabel, it says so right here On a bench in the dark, in the corner of the park Every New York City evening
The next day I return to the usual spot To my dismay, it’s cons in community day And they sandblast the love into dust, into spray
Alexander & Annabel all around them shattered hearts Turned into dust and with one mighty gust They are blown far far apart Alexander loved Annabel, it was there for all to see Now the bench in the park shines bright in the dark On this New York City evening

This song has just become the song for the Post Garrison Blues, as Missy says It's SOOOOO MUCH better in the album, I love the guitar, the rhythm... I don't know... It has some kind of spiral that draws you, and you never even want to resist because it feels so good, so calm, so sad, that kind of melancholy that one loves to be in sometimes... Brilliant song John, reaaaally moving, you know how to touch people souls with your guitar or piano.

Wow, I love this one. Have only listened once as I really had to go to uni (in fact, I was just about to leave in order to go to university when I checked my letterbox.... and then went to university one hour later). It's just so beautiful, especially the chorus. And somehow I feel as if this line 'Alexander & Annabel, all around them shattered hearts' is true atm.

I couldn't agree more on everything written above, and like Kitine, I can't stop listening to this gem, either. It truly is a beautiful song (but then... they're all...). One of the things that make this track so incredibly beautiful may be the harpsichord (I never knew how this instrument sounds... not until now anyway): Exerpt taken from the PopWreckoning Interview, song title came out wrong, but who cares since we all know...

1 more connection with John as my first-born is called: ANNABELLE, just John's spellt it the French way.......... and in Reception Class believe it or not there was a little boy called Alex(Alexander), and He was "madly" in Love with OUR Annabelle, infact wanted 2 Marry her, so when I've seen this song for the 1st time, I was rather shocked and couldn't stop laughing. Annabelle really thinks that I've persuaded John 2 write a song about her............ coudn't She just get closer 2 the TRUTH?

It's a good thing you went to the park in NYC instead of Charleston... "Alexander and Annabel" could have been "Wayne and Andrea!" Doesn't have the same ring! There are oodles and scads of this so-and-so loves so-and-so graffiti on the pier in Charleston and it got me thinking of "Alexander and Annabel." I started thinking about love and graffiti. I started wondering why people graffiti and I think it must be the universal need to leave something on earth that will last... but then the graffiti really won't any more than we do. I think this is the theme of not only Alexander and Annabel but also of the whole album, Departures. It's not just about your departures in your travels but the question of whether when we depart from this life, a bit of us what we have experienced in our comings and goings will live on. Then I started thinking about love and whether it really lasts too. This reminded me of my favorite DMB lyrics from my favorite DMB song, "Two Step": Hey my love do you believe that we might last a thousand years Or more if not for this, Our flesh and blood It ties you and me right up Tie me down
Celebrate we will Because life is short but sweet for certain We're climbing two by two To be sure these days continue These things we cannot changewww.youtube.com/watch?v=nmi7CiqQq44I like to think love does last... Then again, I'm a hopeless romantic!

I love what you wrote, Missy So beautiful and, from my point of view, so true, above all in that part of: "...the universal need to leave something on earth that will last... but then the graffiti really won't any more than we do....", and the people who make the graffitti also know it, but they make it anyway. I mean, we try to leave something in the earth as a memory of ourselves, just in case it will last. In the other hand, you never know what's coming next, and that love expressed on a wall, on a bench, anywhere, it comes to an end before expected... But destiny is funny sometimes. I did a graffitti like that 14 years ago, but just with first letters of our names, LxJ ("x" between names in Spanish means something like "is mad about"). 14 years later it's funny that the graffitti has again the same meaning with another boy name ;D Good song! I liked the lyrics, and searched it in YouTube as your link says that the video is bloqued in my country www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTyqjb-ZMXU

Yes, I agree, Lucy! Nice story, Lucita! Young love...Soo sweet! ;D I don't have any graffiti anywhere... Maybe I need some but first, I have to fall in love again because it's boring just to have "Missy was here" HAAHAHAH! But maybe I'll do it in the bathroom at The Living Room! Thanks for the link! That is my favorite version of "Two Step!" ;D
