Since there were already some statements on the matter I thought we should have a thread for further discussion. to get back to the most interesting question of john or james....... JOHN ANY DAY OF THE WEEK....im sure there are some other folks on here who were john garrison fans prior to his gig with the darling JB who might agree... I will not choose between 2 human beings solely for the fact that would be comparing them and adding the same value to different aspects.... I know neither of them on that personal level, so therefore can't choose between them. I can only choose my preferences based upon how I feel about things or the things people stand for... but not between people.... to clarify loraline.... i wasn't choosing between them as people...I was choosing between their MUSIC...for me PERSONALLY, it is a clear choice musically, and i was just curious about the opinions of others on this messageboard.....i didnt intend for anyone to attempt to make a judgement about their value as human beings I find it even hard to compare John to James musically... IMO their styles are completely different... a different approach as well... At last a forum for John and his wonderful music. I've been a fan since 1st seeing Budapest in London in 2001 and I've watched John grow and make the most amazing, heartfelt, brilliant music ever since. It absolutely baffles me why he isn't one of the biggest music stars in the world and it just goes to show what a mess the music industry is. Hello to all the James Blunt fans. I left a big topic on John on JB's website a while ago to try spread the word of John and make James realize how lucky he is to have such a phenomenal songwriter and singer as his bass player. I am a little miffed that JB took him away from his own music but I guess John would not have taken the job if he didn't need to. And he says he's still writing so good on him. PP As for me, I'd go for the "John any day of the week" at once at the moment, but it's not quite so easy as I truly love James' music as well. So I'll first have to make my mind up and then try to get my thoughts across in a (more or less) decent way. What's your thoughts??? What makes John and his music so special?? What's the difference compared to James' music, or is it all the same for you??

I absolutely loved Loraline's definition that John's music reaches for the soul. That put my thoughts and feelings into words. The quotations are all a bit about choosing. But I can't. And I don't want to either as I love both styles the way they are. Like heart and soul you need both to live.
John's music means a lot to me and I'm extremely grateful I got the chance to find it. I can relate to the lyrics and the emotional tunes often reflect my own feelings, help me to understand and get on. It gets through to me and moves me in a way I hardly knew before. It's special

Thanks for your reply, Flakie. Very well put!!! I assume that's loraline's statement you're talking about... and I totally agree: When listening to James' music, it seems like he is reaching out to touch one's heart. When listening to your music, there are so many things in the lyrics I can relate to, that it feels like reaching for the soul. (By the way, I meant to reply earlier... but that's what happens when sitting at Starbucks on a sunny day using a sh!tty laptop... got kicked out of the system... again.. )

As for the long overdue world-wide musical recognition he so very much deserves as a solo artist I’m sure it comes the day where his genius matches the moment…it’s about time the caterpillar turned into a butterfly… Amen Edit: Ooops, I didn’t mean to write an essay… so if anyone should ever read this, thanks for taking the time…

The thing that I love about JB's music (B2B, ATLS, and 30 or so demos) he has never been afraid to say, "I screwed up, this is me, take me or leave me, but I am never gonna change" I was reading the lyrics to "TBTH" (Budapest) and I knew just by reading the lyrics, John wrote em all. John's lyrics are heartfelt, and you know he's been crushed, but I almost feel helpless in "trying to make it all better". I know a lot of people's reaction to JB after hearing B2B is to just hug him. You have this overwhelming feeling that he just needs a hug. With John, you know a hug won't help. It won't ease the pain, it won't make things ok. He really is a composer. You can hear the music and visualize what the video would look like, or you picture a scene from a heart breaking goodbye in a movie.

I love John’s music for the images it paints in my mind and even though many of his songs take the listener to some rather dark places, they’re not, by any means whatsoever, daunting or depressing in any way. “It hurts so good” – that was a very spot on expression I read somewhere. I did read the entire essay Yet I feel I would say one thing differently... it is not for the images his music paints in my mind, since my images are already there and simply overlap/coincide with his music..... it is for colorizing those images and giving words/sounds to it, that his music gets to me

At first, I need to get something straight: I tried to put some of John's songs to certain genres, but I think this doesn't do his music justice. Actually he created a very own style, beyond the barriers of any genre. I think that's quite an achievement he should be very proud of. I really found it interesting to read everyone's point of view. Loraline, "colorizing those images and giving words/sounds to it" - loved this line. It's a wonderful gift to be able to express the inexpressible through music.... and that's exactly what he does so splendidly. Link 15, your words really made me think. "With John, you know a hug won't help. It won't ease the pain, it won't make things ok." - I read somewhere that he usually writes his songs when life isn't all that glorious (who would write about the heartbroken on a 'bright and sunny' day??) As we all know life is a strange thing which sometimes holds a lot of rain. I'm not sure if all of his songs are autobiographical, but obviously, he's been through some rather tough times. I really don't know him personally, but when we met him (briefly) he didn't seem to be a bitter person at all. As for me, while listening to his music I truly find comfort in his melodies and lyrics and I could imagine writing the songs does the same for him. Oh, and I have to add another thing: In my previous post I didn't even mention that he's so very creative in any respect... directed the video for Testimony, did the artwork for 'Head Towards The Dawn', contributed the photography for 'Above The Cosmos' ... and above all he's playing all those instruments so excellent....as yet I didn't come across anything he isn't good at... hmmm, wait.... maybe this... on the demo for 'Abdicate' he sounds a little bit as if he was having a cold ... and I read somewhere that he is 'rubbish in bed' ;D ;D... but this, of course, same as taste in music is a very subjective matter and other than that absolutely none of my business... (oh, I'm sorry... that's really off topic... )*

I always thought that he sounds kind of very young on the "Abdicate" demo version... different than on all the other songs indeed.

young perhaps... but my guess is he has what one may call an 'old soul', to whom experiences are new in this life yet also are an impression of ancient memories... It is not just the novelty of the experiences but also the understanding/analyzing of those experiences that gives an insight beyond normal perception.
not sure if I can describe exactly what I mean or if anyone can still follow this line of thinking...
