Carousel
I hear the call, hands go over ears I see the signs, cover my eyes Contemporaries winding down Not I
Time for carousel, my day is done Time for resistance, time to run
Sandmen poice keeping watchful eye This is no place for someone as I My day is done, my race run Run
Time for carousel, my day is done Time for resistance, time to run
First thing to do when you know nothing at all Keep plenty underneath to break any fall Knowledge is power and is widely always feared Keeps those in the nosebleed offices running scared
Fill up the books with the clueless out of school Read all the books from the archive labelled "Cool" As soon as questions and suggestions appear Dropped
Time for carousel, my day is done Time for resistance, time to run

I really like this song (needless to say, eh..) - what an intriguing set of lyrics!! I have to admit though that I find myself puzzling over the song-meaning whenever I listen. Starts with the fact that there are at least three different meanings for the word carousel in English (that certain British radio-programme not even included..). And what does the female voice say at the beginning? "Final Call, Capricorn 15th in the city twenty-zero-seven, carousel begins"?? For some strange reason this song paints pictures of Orwell's "1984" or Huxley's "Brave New World" in my mind, don't know why, maybe I'm just reading too much into it (... "call me Snake"... and then call a doctor, please ). Anyway, I wonder what made him write this song??? What do you think the song could be about?? Anybody out there who does have a clue??

I asked myself so often what the song could be about and haven't come up with an idea.

I can try and explain how I see the song, but it will in the end be my interpretation, not how you should see the song You say the dictionary gives 3 meanings for the word carousel I found only 1 in my dictionary and it would not have been the meaning I would have given to the word. My dictionary says carousel = kind of a party, where a lot of drinks go around.. a place where people go to get drunk and escape the turmoil of the day. I would more think of it as a metaphore for merry-go-round.. city nightlife, the rush of the night to escape the obligations of the day. Basically, I feel this is the heart of the song.. To escape everyday problems, expectations and pressure, people seek a place to relax when their day is done. But in doing so, they just end up in that carousel, which is nothing more than a different environment in which people drown all the same, without realizing it. And in this song somebody tries to escape that carousel, sensing it is not his world, seeking peace of mind.... but that is just my view on the song

That's a good interpretation actually.

BTW, that's why I like the worldwideweb (despite all its pitfalls), and what I really love about this messageboard... that we can have this direct and sincere exchange of thoughts. Loraline, quite interesting to read your take on the song-meaning, great how you've put your thoughts into words. I definitely see what you mean!! As for the different meanings of 'carousel', my dictionary says: 1. A Machine with wooden horses on it that turns around and around, which people can ride on for fun. - 2. A continuous moving strip that you collect your bags from at an airport. - 3. A circular divice in which slides for a projector are held - 4. Amusement, mainly US for merry-go-round ... well, like you suggested I too think the 'merry-go-round' thing is the most likely in this case... maybe I should just put the CD on, turn up the volume and listen again...

Thanks for the explanations, Jade, I had no idea of all the different meanings of the word.
