It's your work, too, and you have every reason in the world to be proud of that. I think you are pretty cool and I'd love to have your signature on my Departures CD. Okay, then I'll have to travel all the way to NYC to ask you your autograph (you look scared right now, don't you!? ).

Oh, Matthew, it would add so much more value than you know! I don't think Cosmos or Departures would be what they are without you there to push John. To me, the value of your signature on my copy of either album would be priceless. For me, the value of music is in human connection, perhaps this is why I'm not a music mogul... So to meet for a brief moment and get a signature or have a small chat about the music would be an invaluable life moment, I think. The value would be in the sheer joy of sharing a moment of lovely music. I don't know if this makes any sense and there I go rambling again... So anyway, was nice to meet you too... and I did want your signature and pic with you too, Mr. Producer. Next time, perhaps, I hope! If I'm not chicken again! Hehe!

It's exactly that and I couldn't agree more!

Hey Matthew,
I have just been listening to Akeal's new tunes on MySpace and they sound great! Way to go, Mr. Producer, Afroshane! Great job!
So now I have an ignorant question... What is the difference between mixing and mastering? Are they not the same thing?
Thank You! Cheers! Missy XOXO

Hey Matthew, I'm sorry for asking such an elementary and rudimentary question as my last one. I know you would probably enjoy some more hard hitting questions! I hope I didn't offend you. Please put my last question down to pure layman's ignorance of music industry terms! Now we know I wouldn't make a good interviewer for Rolling Stone... Though what a great gig that would be! Anyway, I just read the interview that y'all did after Rockwood. What a treat to read! Great interview. It was nice to read a little about the process of how you guys work. Sorry again and Thanks! Cheers! Missy XOXO

ah thanks. yeah that piece came out great. helps when the person asking questions is a fan/knowledgeable about the craft and subject.
mixing is blending all the tracks and sounds and putting it down to a stereo L/R mix that you would listen to on a CD, LP, or ipod. mastering is the final step where those stereo files get their final gloss and sheen and are encoded with sales info etc and made commercially ready for radio/sale/download etc. it's a finalization.
alot of black magic and voodoo...

Ah, big thanks from me too, Matt, for the GREAT interview and providing us with all the profound, first hand info on the process of making Departures. I really enjoyed reading this!! Is there a recorded version of this interview existing somewhere? Loving these parts! It's indeed very rare to find someone so totally on the same musical wave-length. So glad it happened and that you make such a great team! From what I've heard of Departures so far, it does, absolutely! I really don't know why I'm so eager to hear the original mix, as I seriously doubt I would even be able to spot the changes, yet I'd love to. Won't ever be available for public consumption, right? BTW, when is your website going to update? You've got me intrigued quite a little bit - It's always so nice to read what you're up to. Ooops, so many words, so little time... All the very best, Mister Mastermind! I'm smiling... Jade xxx P.S.: alot of black magic and voodoo... Hey, I didn't know you were so heavily into black magic and voodoo, Angel Heart! ;D

Thank you for clarfying that for me, afroshane... I always figured that the mastering and mixing happened all in one process at the same time... Silly me. Thanks for taking time to answer my silly Boardie questions. You're greatly appreciated, Afroshane! By the way, I'm a little slow on the uptake... I just realized that your nickname is a play on words of the product Afro-Sheen! Funny! Thanks for your always interesting thoughts and quesitons! I always enjoy reading your posts! It really is rare to find someone that you work so well with! How lovely for John and Matt! I'd like to hear that orignal version too and those updates also, Jade! It would be interesting as a layman, to try to distinguish what the professionals call too much ear candy from a little rougher cut... Black magic and Voodoo??? The zeppelin boys were rumored to be into that too... I knew there had to be a reason that I was so into this music!

Dunno if that mix will ever see the light of day. Not anytime soon as the one we chose doesn't become available to the public to purchase until the 10th.
no recording of the interview. the interviewer took a tape recorder thing for notes but it was just meant to be for writing stuff up.

Thanks for your reply... especially since this time it was not quite so easy to actually spot the questions in between all these words. Love always, Jade xx Aww, thank you so much for updating www.mshane.com/It's GREAT! I wonder if VooDoo spells are being used in Eskimo mythology, too!?

Na not so much. much different workflow on that album than on johns stuff. Okay, I see... Can't believe in how many interesting and completely different projects you have been involved over the past months. I imagine at times it's quite challenging to put oneself in the artists position, dealing with a different approach time and time again, trying to get the magic, the rock and the roll or whatever is their vision out of their stuff. I think it's great how you immerse yourself in always new tasks and get behind and push... the artist AND the faders! It's little wonder then that your knowledge and skills are so much sought after. Way to go! That's beautifully put! There are pros and cons to everything, right? Thanks for always bothering to answer my questions, Matthew. Really means alot! ~ J.
