Since there has been some buzz on the board about NYC, I thought I would start a new thread about The Big Apple.
#1 on my list is Rosa Mexicano Restaurant. Just a must for the Margarita lovers! Their margaritas are killer! The food is great too! Definitely go for lunch though, as it is less crowded and lunch prices are better!
#2 on my list is a street hot dog. I am NOT normally a hot dog eater but there is something about a NYC dog that is amazing. The only time I ever eat them is when I am on the streets of NYC. I think I had about 8 of them in one weekend one time! Way to clog the old arteries!
There is a great place on the main street in Little Italy for cannolis but I can't remember the name of it. Theafroshane probably can tell you since he lives in NYC.
The Metropolitan Museum of ART!!!!! INCREDIBLE is all there is to say about it. The last time I was there, they had an exhibit called "Anglomania." It was an exhibit of British antiques and historical costume. They had everything from dresses of Queen Victoria to costumes worn by David Bowie to Chippendale furniture! Just LOVELY!!!
Central park is also something I like to do. There is a great little crepe stand there.
Of course there are the typical touristy musts: Rockefeller Center, The Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty.
I haven't been to ground Zero because it is too sad for me. I didn't loose anyone but it's just still too heartbreaking to think about!
For the shoppers:
The shops in soho area have young, hip, cool, funky stuff that is actually affordable.
Even if high-end fashion isn't in the budget, Bergdorf's is a MUST just for looking at the beautiful building and all of the latest fashions!!! It's like Harrod's but even better! Though it's very shishi and expensive, I love to go there just to drool over the shoes!! On the 7th floor of Bergdorf's there is a restaurant/bar... It is a very nice place to go for a thingytail. It has a great view of the city.
There is SOOOOO MUCH MORE!!!!!! I haven't even scratched the surface!

What an excellent idea!! If I ever go to NYC to see John play, I would definitely want to stay for at least a week, it is such an amazing place!!! There is nothing better than personal recommendations or travel advice from someone who actually lives there or has spent considerable time there!! I used to have friends that lived there, but when I visited them, we didn't spend any time in the city, we just drove to New Hampshire to meet some other friends and go skiing, then they moved to Alaska...........so missed the NYC experience altogether! Dying to go there!

Ground Zero itself I didnt see, since the area was kinda secluded because of the Pope's visit... But there is a memorial exhibition in a building on the south side of the grounds... it is maintained by family, friends and colleagues of september 11th And has a lot of pictures and stories to it. Quite impressive and definately worth a visit. Take a day to visit the museum of natural history at 81 street, entrance at the central park side. entrance is 'whatever you think is reasonable for you to afford', meaning the wished entrance fee is 7 dollars or so, but you will get a ticket for 1 dollar as well look for the ticket boots on the street.. think it was somewhere in front of flat iron building, but not too sure about that.. get a ticket for one of the musicals that are on stage that day for a lower price... often 50% price... check out the squirrels at madison square and maybe you are in luck and there is some promotional tour in the park... when I was there, there was a colorado promotion tour with birds, (owl and eagle), a canoe stand to test your canoe skills and more stuff to see, do and talk about check out rockwood music hall, a small rock bar at allen street, close to houston street eastside, where often you find live music.. take some cash with you for the artists, for after each concert of an hour, the bucket goes round

Great topic, missalabama, thanks for all the info! Thank you too, Lydia. I was there on 9/11 last year, and it was exactly the same. It was impossible to even catch a glimpse of Ground Zero, unless you would have been inside one of the high rises around that area.

Weeee!! Claps for you Missy Thanks for all this info, you're convincing me LOL I'm not convincing myself, I'm convincing Lucy! LOL!!! Hey Lucy, I found a flight for you!!! Check out Delta Airlines from Madrid to Laguardia Ariport, NYC ranging from 330-450 Euros. www.delta.com/booking/findFlights.do#topI'm assuming you could take the train from your town to Madrid??? Or maybe a little Puddle Jumper flight?? Since theafroshane was talking of hotels in the Lower East side... Check out the Hotel on Rivington. I haven't stayed there but have had drinks there... I LOVE the architecture and interiors on this one! They have rooms for around the $200-250/night range. www.hotelonrivington.com/ Am I convincing you, Lucy? LOL! ;D Thanks for your recommendations, Loraline! I haven't been to The museum of Natural History, so it is now on my to-do list. I agree with you that it is better to do the musicals in the afternoon... The ballet and symphony are my favorite. The last time I was in NYC, there was construction at Lincoln Center... so I have been waiting to see the finished product.

No problem about departuring from Madrid, my boyfriend is from there and he says he'll come with me (I'm garrisonaizing him, mwhaha!! ;D), and sooner or later Madrid will be my next home! yay! About the hotel - wow, impressive first pic on the website... And it's near to the venues where John used to play (if I've got the correct directions). Prices are similar to the ones of hotels said by Matt, aren't they? Yeah, you conviced me ;D +karma for you

YAY, Lucy!!! Karma back at ya!
The date I put was the last weekend of August... I'm curious to see what price you get.
Isn't that hotel amazing? I think the rates are comparable to the ones for the LES.

Isn't that hotel amazing? I think the rates are comparable to the ones for the LES. Indeed, it is!!! This spot looks rather tempting! I think I'd go for the 'HIGH FLOOR CORNER KING WITH SOAKING TUB', while the Penthouse isn't bad either - decadence at all events... life is good, but maybe I should have a look at the rates first! The date I put was the last weekend of August. Last weekend of August would be just perfect, as another artist I'm quite fond of, Tom McRae, will be playing 2 shows at the Living Room/NYC on Sep. 2nd and 3rd I think. That would be my ultimate dream coming true if I got to see both, Mister Garrison and Mister McRae, perform in my favorite city on earth. Off topic: "End Of The World News" - Tom McRae live, going a bit foofighters... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkf6jMyYn8M&feature=channel_pageHad to throw that one in, sorry...

Hey, Devlin. Sorry you missed NYC but New Hampshire sounds nice. I have never been there. I hope you can make it to NYC for a John gig so I can get to meet you as I always love reading your posts.
LOL, Jade. Maybe if all the boardies chipped in, we could afford the corner king with the soaking tub! It's like a set for a rap video... haha!
Thanks for that Tom McRae post, Jade. Nice one!
Can't wait to go shoe shopping with ya, Jade! Missy XOXO

ROFL! Now I have that R. Kelly song in my head- "After the show it's the after party. After the party it's the hotel Lobby!"... At least I think it's R. Kelly. I don't know my hip-hop very well.

ROFL, Missy. Isn't R. Kelly the one that would never complain having thousands of screaming teenagers to whom he is old enough to be their fathers. ;D ************************************************** Hey, another thing to put on the 'Things to do in NYC'-list: Go and see the legendary COSMOS corner (23rd St/2nd Av, no secret since the details were given in one of John's blogs ) Have to admit that this has been one of the first things I did last time I was there. On the right, that's me - shortly before the crazy stalker in me came out *Note to Department of Housing Preservation: You'd better fix your signs, folks, if you want to make sure people know where the key to heating system area lock is located.* Guess next time I'll be refused entry into the country, likely to be busted at LaGuardia
